Woefoep (b.1973) - aka Mark Wouters.
Schiedam, Netherlands.
Mark Wouters started making collages at the age of 14 when he was exchanging
funny, collage like letters with a friend. Later, during his studies at
the Willem de Kooining Academy in Rotterdam, his main interest became
three dimensional assemblages in the tradition of Joseph Cornell's boxes,
in which he used old screws, bolts, rocks, shells, insects and much more.
Working as an illustrator he used digital collage
techniques for producing 3D computer models, attracted by the unlimited
opportunities of the medium. But still he sees handmade cut'n'paste collages
as the bigger challenge and the richer experience, both in creating and
in viewing. Woefoep's passion for collecting all things nice and rare
is not limited to real objects but embraces all sorts of images he can
find on the net as well, which he then assembles to digital collages.
Sometimes he uses a collage as a starting point for a painting but mostly
he works on many different collages at the same time, changing and rearranging
their elements, keeping them open for change for as long as possible until
in the end he achieves his stated objective of "triggering something
alien."
