Kareem Rizk (b.1984?) Australia
He studied graphic design from 2001 to 2004 and graduated with a Bachelor
of Design in Visual Communication. He was introduced to collage at art
school but only started using it as a creative outlet after his formal
studies, trying to create something rawer, more passionate and less commercial.
Kareem's obsession with nostalgia draws him to multi-layered, three-dimensional
paper collages which often include elements of vintage magazines, old
books and all sorts of printed bits and pieces, which he has often collected
over a long period of time.
Kareem's working process can best be described
as slow-paced: gathering textures, patterns and colours, loosely laying
them out on the working surface and combining them with typographic elements,
letting the piece develop naturally and finally painting on it in different
media like acrylic, oil pastel or pencil to add further dimensions to
the work. Sometimes the design of larger canvasses is initially digitally
tried out in Photoshop before reproducing it with traditional materials.
The dynamics and balance of the final composition, however, is always
determined by strong design principles.
